Character without the cold

Replacing windows in a house you do not want to change

The appeal of a Highlands home is usually the thing that makes it hard to heat: tall windows, generous glazing and original joinery that has moved over a century. Owners are rightly wary of replacement work, because a badly chosen window flattens the front of a house in a way that cannot be undone.

Because every unit is made to measure, the new window fills the opening you already have instead of forcing you to alter it. Casement and French configurations hold the vertical emphasis and the slim sightlines that period joinery relies on, and the colour runs through the profile rather than sitting on it as paint.

Fog, damp and cold

The damp that comes with Highlands winters

The Highlands sit in cloud and fog for a good part of winter, so the issue is rarely just temperature. Moisture hangs about, and in a house with cold single glazing it condenses on the glass, soaks into timber reveals and leaves mould along the sills and behind the curtains.

Warming the inside surface of the glass is what stops that cycle. A sealed double glazed unit in a multi chamber frame keeps the pane above the point where moisture settles, and compression seals stop the damp draughts that make a high ceilinged room feel colder than it is.

Is it time to upgrade?

Signs a Highlands house needs attention

If any of these sound familiar, replacement will make a real difference to how the house feels and performs.

  • Mould or black staining along sills and reveals each winter.
  • Original sashes that have dropped, stuck or rotted at the base.
  • Rooms that feel damp as well as cold.
  • Condensation that does not clear until the middle of the day.
  • Draughts through high ceilinged rooms with the windows shut.

Common questions

Southern Highlands windows, answered

Will uPVC look wrong on a period Highlands home?

It does not have to. The configuration is what carries the character, so casement and French styles made to the existing opening hold the proportions and slim sightlines. We would rather talk you through the options than have you regret the look.

Can you match an unusual or tall original opening?

Yes. Everything is made to measure for the opening it goes into, which is the main reason made to order suits older houses better than stock sizes.

What will it do about the mould on my window reveals?

Mould there is almost always a condensation problem. Warming the inside surface of the glass stops the moisture settling in the first place, which addresses the cause rather than the symptom.

Do you cover the whole Wingecarribee area?

We do, from Mittagong through Bowral and Moss Vale out to the surrounding villages.

Is there any painting or upkeep?

None of the sanding and repainting that period timber joinery demands every few years. A wash down is the whole maintenance routine, and the frames carry a ten year manufacturer warranty.
