Altitude and cold

Why Orange homes get the worst of the condensation

At this elevation the overnight minimum drops further and stays down longer than it does on the plains. A single pane tracks that temperature almost exactly, so by morning the glass is cold enough for every bit of moisture in the room to settle on it. Wipe it off and it is back the next day.

A sealed cavity between two panes keeps the inner surface warm enough that the moisture stays in the air instead. For the coldest rooms, or for homes further out of town, triple glazing takes it further again. We will tell you where it is worth the extra and where double glazing already does the job.

Two kinds of housing

Period homes and new estates, two different jobs

Orange has a well kept stock of older homes near the centre and a steady run of new building on the edges, and they need opposite things. On an older house the priority is usually a replacement that respects the proportions of the original joinery while finally sealing properly.

On a new build the decisions happen on paper: which elevations justify triple glazing, where Low E coatings earn their place, and how the window schedule affects the energy rating. We are happy to price either from plans or from a site measure.

Is it time to upgrade?

Signs your Orange windows are not coping

If any of these sound familiar, replacement will make a real difference to how the house feels and performs.

  • Condensation or ice on the inside of the glass on cold mornings.
  • Bedrooms that are uncomfortably cold despite the heating.
  • Mould appearing around reveals and on sills.
  • Original timber sashes that stick, rattle or have dropped.
  • Heating costs that keep climbing each winter.

Common questions

Double glazing in Orange, answered

Should I choose double or triple glazing in Orange?

Start with where the house actually loses heat. Bedrooms on the southern and western sides, and anything above the town on the Canobolas side, are the rooms that repay triple glazing. Elsewhere a well specified double glazed unit with Low E does the job, and we will say so rather than quote you triple throughout.

Will it stop the ice forming inside my windows?

In almost every case, yes. Ice on the inside of the glass means the pane is dropping below freezing. The inner pane of a sealed double glazed unit stays far closer to room temperature.

Can you match the look of my older Orange home?

We make every unit to measure, so we work to the existing opening. Casement and French styles hold the proportions of period joinery while sealing and performing far better.

Do you quote from plans for a new build?

Yes. Send the window schedule or the plans and we will price the openings and flag anything worth reconsidering before it is locked in. We have our packages for new home windows and doors, explore all now

How long will the frames last up here?

uPVC does not rot, rust or need repainting, and the frames carry a ten year manufacturer warranty. Cold and frost do not degrade the material.
