Frost hollow living

Why Lithgow mornings are so hard on glass

Cold air settles in the valley overnight, so Lithgow regularly wakes colder than the towns around it. Single glazed windows sit at close to the outside temperature by dawn, which is why the inside of the glass streams with water and the room nearest the window is the one nobody wants to sit in.

Putting a sealed cavity between two panes breaks that path. The inner pane stays far closer to the temperature of the room, so the condensation largely stops and the cold zone beside the window goes with it.

Wood heating

Getting more out of the heat you are already paying for

Plenty of Lithgow homes run a wood heater or a combustion stove and do a good job of producing heat. The trouble is holding on to it: leaky sashes and single glazing let it straight back out, so one room roasts while the rest of the house stays cold.

Sealing the openings properly spreads that heat further and keeps it in the house for longer after the fire dies down overnight. It is usually the cheapest way to make an existing heating setup work better, rather than adding more heating.

Signs your Lithgow windows need replacing

If any of these sound familiar, replacement will make a real difference to how the house feels and performs.

  • Water running down the inside of the glass most winter mornings.
  • Rooms that go cold within an hour of the fire going out.
  • Timber sashes that have rotted, swollen or been painted shut.
  • Rattling or draughty aluminium sliders with worn seals.
  • Mould appearing on reveals, sills or nearby curtains.

Common questions

Lithgow windows, answered

Will double glazing stop the water on my windows every morning?

In most Lithgow houses it does. That morning film appears because the glass has tracked the overnight valley temperature down near freezing. Put a sealed cavity behind it and the inside pane no longer gets cold enough for the moisture to settle.

Can you fit new windows into an old cottage opening?

Yes. Every unit is made to measure for the opening it goes into, so there is no need to resize the opening to suit a stock window.

Is it worth doing if I heat with wood?

Usually more so, not less. A wood heater produces plenty of heat but a leaky, single glazed house loses it quickly. Sealing and glazing the openings keeps that heat in the house for longer.

Do the frames cope with frost and snow?

Yes. uPVC does not rot, rust or absorb water, and the colour runs through the profile so there is no painted finish to crack or peel in the cold.

Do you come out to Lithgow?

We do. We measure on site, manufacture in our own workshop at Wetherill Park and bring our own installers out to fit them.
