uPVC against aluminium

Why coastal aluminium frames fail and uPVC does not

Most Shire houses were built with aluminium, and near the water it has a predictable life. Salt attacks the surface, the powder coat blisters and lifts at the welds, the frame chalks white and the tracks corrode until the slider becomes a two handed job. Aluminium also conducts heat and cold straight through, which is why those frames sweat on winter mornings.

uPVC has no metal surface for salt to attack and conducts very little heat. There is no coating to blister, the colour is through the profile, and the multi chamber frame is an insulator rather than a bridge. The practical difference over ten or fifteen years near the beach is substantial.

Beachside living

Wind driven rain, security and the bushland edge

Southerly weather pushes rain hard against the glass on exposed streets, and a worn brush seal on an old slider will not hold it out. Multi point locking and compression seals pull the sash tight into the frame on every side, which handles the weather and the security question at the same time.

Properties backing onto the Royal National Park or the bushland reserves may also carry a bushfire rating. We supply BAL rated configurations up to BAL 40 where an assessment calls for it.

Is it time to upgrade?

Signs your Shire windows are on the way out

If any of these sound familiar, replacement will make a real difference to how the house feels and performs.

  • White chalky bloom or pitting on aluminium frames.
  • Sliding doors that need two hands or jump the track.
  • Water getting past the seals in southerly weather.
  • Heavy condensation on aluminium frames on winter mornings.
  • Locks that no longer engage properly on the first try.

Common questions

Sutherland Shire windows, answered

Is uPVC really better than aluminium near the beach?

For durability in salt air, yes. There is no metal surface to corrode and no powder coating to blister or lift. uPVC also insulates where aluminium conducts, which is why aluminium frames are the ones that sweat in winter.

Will new windows cut the noise from the main roads?

Double glazing reduces it, and the glass specification matters. Different pane thicknesses either side of the cavity, or laminated glass, perform better against traffic noise than a standard unit.

Do you supply bushfire rated windows for properties near the national park?

Yes, in configurations up to BAL 40. If you have a bushfire assessment, send it with your plans and we will specify each opening accordingly.

Can you replace a large aluminium slider with a uPVC equivalent?

Yes. For wide openings a lift and slide is often the better answer, because it lifts off the seals to move and compresses them when closed, so a heavy panel stays easy to use and seals tightly.

How much maintenance do the frames need?

Washing them down. There is no painting, no re coating and no rust, and the frames carry a ten year manufacturer warranty.
